LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Policy creates concerns
As subscribers of the Bemidji Pioneer for over 50 years, we have enjoyed reading the letters to the editor. During the election season a variety of opinions are expressed, some simply endorse a favorite candidate, some off new information to the voter, and of course there are those with half-truths and the intent of political assassination. It is the voter’s responsibility to evaluate these letters when deciding who they will vote for.
The recently announced policy of charging for political letters therefore comes as a disappointment. It is my concern that the new policy will discourage those with limited income and on tight budgets and they will forgo expressing their views because they must now pay to be heard. Our country was founded on freedom of speech, but charging for expressing political opinion smack of influence peddling and I am against this.
