MEN’S HOCKEY: Fitzgerald invited to Wild development camp
ST. PAUL -- Former Bemidji State men’s hockey standout Gerry Fitzgerald is one of 43 players who have been invited to the Minnesota Wild’s development camp at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, July 10-15.
The Wild will hold two scrimmages at the Xcel Energy Center that are free and open to the public. Open scrimmages are set for Thursday, July 12, at 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday, July 15, at 5 p.m. Each scrimmage will feature two, 30-minute running time halves.
Fitzgerald, a recent BSU graduate, will be in attendance after finishing the 2017-18 season with the AHL’s Iowa Wild. The Port Alberni, B.C. native recorded eight points (4g-4a) in 16 games for Iowa, after posting 25 points (7g-18a) in 27 games for the Beavers during his senior season.
The former Beaver signed a one-year standard player contract in May with Iowa, the Minnesota Wild’s top farm team.
Among the players invited to the camp are 20 prospects selected by Minnesota in the NHL Draft. Players scheduled to attend include: Louie Belpedio, Kaapo Kahkonen, Brennan Menell, Dmitry Sokolov, along with all eight players taken in the 2018 NHL Draft: Filip Johansson (first round), Jack McBain (third round), Alexander Khovanov (third round), Connor Dewar (third round), Simon Johansson (fifth round), Damien Giroux (fifth round), Shawn Boudrias (sixth round) and Sam Hentges (seventh round).
Minnesota Wild and Iowa Wild coaches and staff members will lead the on-ice sessions. Players will participate in daily skating, strength and conditioning sessions, as well as off-ice topics including sports psychology, social media training and nutrition education.
Fitzgerald is one of two players from the 2017-18 Beavers that have been invited to NHL development camps this summer.
Zach Whitecloud attended the Vegas Golden Knights’ camp last week in Nevada. Whitecloud played two seasons for BSU before signing with Vegas in March.
